Dental X-rays

In February 2024, the American Dental Association (ADA) recommended that dentists stop using lead aprons and thyroid shields for all patients. This recommendation applies to all patients, regardless of age or health status.

  • Routine X-rays

Medical societies like the American College of Radiology (ACR) and American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) recommend not using lead aprons for routine X-rays. Research shows that the radiation levels used in modern X-ray machines are very low, so the risk of harm is very small or even zero.

  • Technology

The advancement of technology from film to digital has greatly reduced the amount of radiation used.

While shielding does not offer any advantages from a safety perspective, it can offer a sense of reassurance to those concerned about radiation exposure. So we still have x-ray shielding available at the office for those who request it.
